Bio
Dr. Michael Conrady, AAGO, is a musician and educator. He is Director of Music, Organist and Choirmaster at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Dallas, TX, where he has served for 18 years. During his stewardship, the music ministry has grown to include four adult choirs, a flourishing children's choir program, a contemporary worship ensemble, a cantor ministry, and a concert series.
A third-generation Catholic organist, Conrady began his organ studies with James Strand at Southwestern College while he was in high school before attending Baylor University, where he studied organ with Joyce Jones while completing his undergraduate degree. While at Baylor, he was awarded the First Place winner at the 1998 William Hall Organ Competition. After Baylor, he attended Southern Methodist University, completing a Master of Music (MM) in organ, a Master of Theological Studies (MTS), and a Master of Sacred Music (MSM). At SMU, he studied harpsichord and organ with Larry Palmer, sacred music with Michael Hawn and Chris Anderson, and conducting with David R. Davidson. He then continued graduate studies at the University of North Texas, where he studied organ with Jesse Eschbach for two years, focusing on 18th-century performance practices of France and Germany. Returning to SMU, he completed the Doctor of Ministry (DMin) degree in 2019, studying liturgics with Mark Stamm. Dr. Conrady's doctoral research project culminated in a thesis on medieval communion antiphons and the composition of new music for use in the Roman liturgy.
In 2019, he joined the faculty of the University of North Texas College of Music, where he currently serves as an adjunct professor of Sacred Music. The Sacred Music program at UNT is unique in its status as a public university program established to mentor and prepare students for careers in music, worship, and arts leadership.
In addition to pastoral ministry and teaching, Conrady enjoys concertizing, composing liturgical music, and serving on a number of professional organizations in the fields of music and liturgy. He is active in the Hymn Society of United States and Canada, where he has presented hymn festivals and taught seminars on liturgy and music. He has served on the Dallas Diocesan Liturgical Commission and the Diocesan Commission for Sacred Spaces. He was certified as an Associate of the American Guild of Organists (AAGO) in 2007 and currently serves the AGO as Educational Coordinator for the Southwest Region.
